Route 5799, Jordan valley 12.07.12
Photographer: Rachel Hayut
12/07/2012
A Toyota pickup truck blocks the road. Palestinians are detained. A soldier proudly informs us of a “battalion run". At the water station dozens of plastic cups scattered on the road. The commander is in a very good mood, promises that everyone is drinking and when it’s over they’ll remove the discarded cups.

18 cars on the roadside are waiting to cross to the West Bank, the soldiers collecting IDs from the passengers. People had already gotten out of the burning hot cars when we arrived, it’s 37 degrees Celsius in the shade but there isn’t any shade. They’ve been waiting more than half an hour. Most of the cars are crowded with laborers returning from working in the settlements’ fields; they began at 5 in the morning, in the sun, and because of the Ramadan fast they didn’t eat or drink. Now they’re stuck here, at the checkpoint. People are very angry, also at us standing helplessly before them. In desperation they’re seeking help, not sympathy…

We met with the head of the Ramin local council and residents of the village to check on the progress of paving the access road to the village from the main road #557. At present, in order to reach the village one must drive via Anabta to Tulkarm, take the road to Jenin and at the top of the hill there’s a lovely road winding toward the village. The route is lovely but dangerous, particularly when traffic is heavy.

Al Auja the spring which until ten years ago flowed abundantly and provided water via channels to the town of Al Auja, the surrounding localities and the Dead Sea (1/3 to each destination. Rusted dams, blocked channels, and the famous water slide are all ruined, because Israel erected three giant pumping stations nearby and another one higher up the hill, and diverted all the water to the settlements.
