Hamra/Beqaot checkpoint 22.01.13
Photographer: Hanna Barag
Jan-22-2013
Four Palestinians were waiting for the Shabak (JSS) for hours. One of them had forgotten his ID at home, and the three others weren’t told why they had been detained. We contacted various offices to find out what was going on and speed their release. After an hour and a half they were released. And we wonder: What would those men have done had we not happened to stop there.

He lives west of the road but tried nevertheless to cross the earth mound erected by the IDF. He was caught by a security patrol of the Beqa’ot settlement, which summoned the army.

Al Malih (route 5799) - a long line of waiting cars. At the roadside a kind of temporary camp is seen, dozens of tractors' platforms loaded with blankets, pots, clothes, etc. All the inhabitants of the village which received an order yesterday to leave their homes between 4 PM until 2:30 PM the next day. Thousands were forced to spend the freezing night out in the open (it gets extremely cold at night in this Jordan Valley area, as it does in desert climate), sleeping on platforms or the backs of trucks when all that protects them from the night cold is a miserable nylon sheet.

A Toyota pickup truck blocks the road. Palestinians are detained. A soldier proudly informs us of a “battalion run". At the water station dozens of plastic cups scattered on the road. The commander is in a very good mood, promises that everyone is drinking and when it’s over they’ll remove the discarded cups.

18 cars on the roadside are waiting to cross to the West Bank, the soldiers collecting IDs from the passengers. People had already gotten out of the burning hot cars when we arrived, it’s 37 degrees Celsius in the shade but there isn’t any shade. They’ve been waiting more than half an hour. Most of the cars are crowded with laborers returning from working in the settlements’ fields; they began at 5 in the morning, in the sun, and because of the Ramadan fast they didn’t eat or drink. Now they’re stuck here, at the checkpoint. People are very angry, also at us standing helplessly before them. In desperation they’re seeking help, not sympathy…

On Monday, darkness fell on Khabis Sawaftah’s family. While they were busy with their morning tasks, two bulldozers, 12 vehicles from the Civil Administration, Border Police and about 40 soldiers descended on them, ordering them out of their home. Khabis, his wife and their five children stood 20 meters away, the soldiers standing between them and the house, watching Civil Administration personnel dumping their belongings, sacks of lentils and rice tearing and spilling everywhere. Blankets and mattresses, schoolbooks and clothing. Then in a few minutes the home had been turned into a pile of stones, boards and plastic sheeting.

A fire zone and nature reseve signs. How absurd it is to prohibit grazing in the area is evident, for example, in the Umm Zuka nature reserve, adjoining the Peles army base in the northern Jordan Valley. It encompasses a huge area, with two signs welcoming visitors: “Umm Zuka Nature Reserve” and “Firing Range” Shepherds are not allowed entry to graze their flocks and herds on the neglected vegetation in winter, and in the summer while the army fires there, igniting huge fires among those dry vegetation. There’s not one bird, not one living thing in the nature reserve – it’s all burnt. A visitor to this “nature reserve” is shocked by the neglect and the danger in the combination of a “Nature Reserve” and a military training area. And that’s what’s known, in occupied Palestine - as a Nature Reserve!!!

A container has been placed at the site as a waiting room. One of the walls of the container has been removed. It’s remarkably ugly. We assume that this structure, made completely of metal, will be like an oven when the hot summer arrives. The place is filthy and disgusting; the Palestinians aren’t using it even now, although the weather isn’t hot.
