One dreamy spring day in the Jordan Valley

Escorting shepherds in the Jordan valley:

We went out with the flock belonging to "Little" Mohammed from Ein el-Hilwa.  The community of Ein el-Hilwa comprises several small family units. Muhammad's unit consists of two families of two brothers – Big Mohammad (the eldest) and Little Mohammad. Their tent is situated to the west of route 578 (the Allon road) and the settlement of Maskiyot overlooks it from the east. The illegal outpost of Asael (which also carries out illegal activities) lies to the west. The shepherds have recently been threatened by settlers from Asael, which is why they have again asked us to come out with them.

The shepherd was 15-year-old Hamoudi (“cutie”), and I can’t tell you how cute he is. He took us west from his home to an area next to the outpost. We circled the outpost from the west, walking along the wadi, climbing up the mountains, and finally reaching a spot nestling in the hills, like a giant stadium, where the flock could graze freely, wandering up and down and we could see exactly where they were. We could whistle and make other sounds if they strayed too far out of sight.

Words cannot describe how beautiful this spot is. At this time of year, all is green and flowering – swathes of green and yellow and white, and new leaves. Ask Miki the name of the thorny bush.. All we had to do was to enjoy it, take a deep breath, and feel love for the world.

Hamoudi tended the flock like a grown-up. The bells on the neck of the donkey and the dominant ewe tinkled constantly. Somewhere there was a giant rock sculpture that made us think that this is where the Syrian-African rift was formed.

At lunchtime, Hamoudi used a branch he’d picked up to light a fire between two stones. He cut up tomatoes and a green pepper and created a splendid meal (to be precise, this was the first day of Ramadan, but he exempted himself from the fast claiming, correctly, that working shepherds are not required to fast). He told us about his family life and patiently answered the questions of these two curious women.

At this time of year, days in the pasture are long. There’s abundant food for the flock and the weather is fine – perfect conditions for the flock. We went back via Khalat Makhoul for meetings and other business.

We thought this was an excellent way of combining a good deed with having a good time and enjoying peace of mind, while you were at the demonstrations on the Day of Disruptions. We recommend it.

ליווי רועים בקעת הירדן: מיקי פישר ורחל אפק (כתבה וצלמה)

 ליווינו את העדר של מוחמד 'הקטן' מעין אל חילווה Ein El Hilwa.  בקהילה של עין חלווה יש כמה יחידות קטנות. בזו שמדובר בה כאן יש שתי משפחות של שני אחים, מוחמד הגדול (הבכור) ומוחמד הקטן.  המאהל שלהם ממוקם ממערב לכביש אלון 578 וממזרח לו משקיפה עליהם התנחלות משכיות. ממערב נמצא המאחז הלא חוקי עשהאל, שגם עושה מעשים לא חוקיים.
בימים האחרונים יש איומים עליהם מצד המאחז עשהאל, ולכן הם חוזרים לבקש ליווי.

הרועה בן ה-15, חמודי, היה חמוד שאין לתאר. הוא הוביל אותנו מערבה ממקום המגורים. אזור שלידו נמצא המאחז. הקפנו את המאחז ממערב וכך הלכנו לאורך הוואדי, טיפסנו  על ההרים ןהגענו בסופו של דבר לשטח בין גבעות כמו אצטדיון ענק, שהעדר יכול לנוע בן בחופשיות, לעלות ולרדת, בעוד אנחנו הרועים רואים בדיוק איפה הוא נמצא. יכולים לשרוק לו ולהשמיע קולות אחרים במידה והוא (העדר) מגזים ונעלם.

אין לתאר את יפי המקום. העונה הירוקה והפורחת של השנה, שטחים של ירוק וצהוב ולבן ועלים חדשים על (תשאלו את מיקי איך קוראים לשיח הקוצני הזה), ונשאר רק ליהנות ולנשום אוויר ולאהוב את העולם.

חמודי ניהל את העדר כמו גדול. הפעמונים שמחוברים לצוואר החמור והכבשה הראשית לא הפסיקו לדנדן, ובמקום אחר נשקף פסל של סלעים ענק שגורם לחשוב שכאן נפער השבר הסורי אפריקאי.

בהפסקת הצהרים הדליק חמודי אש מענף יבש שמצא בדרך, סידר מדורה בין שתי אבנים, חתך עגבניות ופלפל ירוק והכין לנו סעודה לתפארת (יש לדייק, היום התחיל הרמדאן, אבל הוא פוטר עצמו מהצום בטענה הנכונה שמי שרועה לא יכול לצום), תוך שהוא מספר על חיי המשפחה, ועונה לכל השאלות שלנו בסבלנות רבה. שתי חתיאריות סקרניות שכמותנו.

בימים אלה המרעה נמתח לאורך שעות ארוכות. לצאן יש אוכל, מזג האוויר נעים והכל פועל לטובת העדר.

חזרנו דרך ח'לת מקחול, לפגישות ועניינים.

וחשבנו שזו דרך מצוינת לעשות מעשה טוב וגם ליהנות בכרטיס אחד. הרבה שקט לראש. בזמן שאתן ביליתם בהפגנות ביום "אם השיבושים". מומלץ.
