Nablus Gate - 2nd Friday of Ramadan

There were many more Israeli security forces present outside Damascus Gate following the incidents on the Temple Mount – Harem El Sharif.  These included policemen and soldiers from the border patrol. 

This was an extremely complicated day.  At 08:00 this morning the Israeli press reported that right wing Israelis were planning to conduct a Passover sacrifice on the Temple Mount and that young people believed that they could prevent them from doing so with violence were organizing themselves.  According to the few Palestinians, who were willing to talk, there was no danger to people praying at the Western Wall and the police was lenient regarding who was allowed to enter.  In actual fact, it was  the police presence that incited the violence.  If they had remained outside, the Wakif (Muslim religious leaders) would have dealt with things.  I was not there but I saw the results.

There was also a procession held by Catholics along the Via Delarosa in honor of Annunciation Day.    According to the police  a large number of pilgrims participated in the procession.

When I arrived at 11:20 the procession had already ended and I was able to walk down with the few Muslims who were going down to the mosque for Friday prayers.  I decided to go up to the roof of the Austrian Hostel and I took  photos of the holy places and the worshippers walking down to the Al Aksa Mosque.  I continued until I reached the turn to the left towards the mosque and the police told me there was no entrance for non – Muslims.    

There were policemen and security forces at every junction (which were surrounded by fences). Aside from one instance in which a soldier aimed his weapon at the crowd I didn’t see any weapons pointed at anyone.

I didn’t succeed in getting any information from the police or from the worshippers aside from what I have reported, and only one woman on her way to pray asked why a few hotheaded people were dictating our lives.

After the prayers began we left because it was already the beginning of the holiday.

ההיערכות מחוץ לשער שכם הייתה הרבה יותר מאוישת בכוחות ביטחון ישראלים, שוטרים ומג"ב, אחרי האירועים של הבוקר בהר הבית – הר המקדש - חארם אל שריף. 

בכלל היה היום יום מורכב, בבוקר ב 8:00 לפי העיתונות הישראלית נפוצו שמועות שאנשי ימין מתכוונים להעלות זבח פסח על ההר המקודש וצעירים שמאמינים שהם יכולים למנוע באלימות את הדבר התארגנו. לפי הפלסטינים המעטים שהיו מוכנים לדבר לא נשקפה שום סכנה למתפללים בכותל והמשטרה הייתה עם יד קלה על הכניסה  ורק הכניסה של המשטרה חממה את הרוחות. אם הם היו נשארים בחוץ אנשי הווקף היו מטפלים במה שצריך.. לא הייתי שם אבל ראינו תוצאות.

בנוסף לכך הייתה תהלוכה של הקתולים לכבוד יום הבשורה – בויה דה לה רוזה – דרך הייסורים של ישו. והשנה הגיעו צליניות וצלינים וראיתי תיירים. לפי המשטרה הייתה תהלוכה רבת משתתפים.

ב11:20 כשהגעתי כבר נסתיימה התהלוכה ובשל מיעוט מוסלמים שירדו לתפילת הששי יכולתי לרדת . החלטתי לעלות לגג של בית ההארחה האוסטרי וצילמתי מהגג שתי תמונות – של המקומות הקדושים ושל המתפללים המעטים שירדו לכיוון מסגד אל אקצה. מכיוון שכך, המשכתי לרדת לכיוון אל אקצה, עד שהשוטרים אמרו לי בפניה שמאלה להר עצמו שאין כניסה ללא מוסלמים.

היו שוטרים וכוחות ביטחון בכל צומת, מגודרים, וחוץ ממקרה אחד של חייל/שוטר שהפנה את הנשק כלפי הקהל לא ראיתי נשקים מכוונים.

לא הצלחתי לקבל מידע מהמשטרה ולא מההולכים לתפילה מעבר למה שדיווחתי, ורק אישה אחת שהייתה בדרכה לתפילה שאלה למה מעט חמומי מוח מכתיבים לנו את החיים.... למה?

בשל מגבלות ערב החג עזבנו לאחר תחילת התפילה.
