Morning

  1. 00

At the Jit junction on the road leading eastwards, there is an army Hummer astride the road.

The ‘short’ road from Shave Shomron is paved and tarred almost to where it joins the road to Dir Sharaf.  A number of Israeli cars from Shave Shomron already use it although it is not yet opened.

At the Haviyot checkpoint 4 soldiers stand under the netting next to the booth. Two move across to a jeep that is waiting for them across the road – they have finished their watch. One of the remaining soldiers approaches us to chat.  According to him, throughout Ramadan including  Jewish holidays, Israeli Arabs are allowed to enter Nablus without limitation.

It is early.  Clocks have already been put back on the West Bank and, therefore, there is almost no traffic.
