The parking lot in Kiryat Arba was filled with soldiers, police, jeeps and bulldozers. We decided to follow the convoy arriving on Road 60 near to the turnoff to Road 356. More jeeps, police, etc. were waiting. They had come to demolish several sheds which had been built for cattle belonging to two brothers from the Rajabi family of Hebron. The owners said that they had received warning that the army was coming to destroy their buildings. He also said that they had built on agricultural lands and I wanted to know if cows were not also agricultural in the broad sense of the word.

An empty deserted van probably used as a place of rest. The tractor pulverized it and then pushed it into the ditch. This van is considered a serious threat to the security of the State of Israel. People are building without permits since the IDF authorities ignore their request for permits.

Just think how much money it has cost the government to carry out this destruction. And what was interesting was that there was no violence. Unlike the violence we see when once in a blue moon the army goes out to an illegal settlement to destroy whatever is there.

An elementary school was recently built in Palestinian Susiya. Personnel from the Civil Authority paid a visit at the start of the project and found no cause to object to it. Until completion of the school, children either didn't go to school at all or stayed with relatives in Ya'ata so that they could be near a school. But the school signifies attachment, a sort of tie to the land, and this the Civil Authority and the settlers from Jewish Susiya cannot abide and so they have managed to come up with a legal cause that allowed them to have a demolition orders issued for the school and the water wells, including the structures and the access roads. The school is one recognized by the Palestinian Authority and includes four classrooms and an external toilet building.

Antenna Hill, another desolate spot not far from Hebron. A smooth road leads up to the hilltop, not paved but clearly rolled out with heavy equipment. This was the site of the murder of two guards (guarding the antenna) and has been turned into a memorial for them.

Solar energy panels that have been donated by the Europeans to provide the village of Umm Imneizil electricity. The Civil Administration has decided to destroy the panels allegedly because they have been erected without permits. The donors apparently got official agreement to install them in advance. The village is terribly poor and neglected and the electricity provided by these panels makes a huge difference in people's lives.

Approximately 90 people live in tents scattered in the valley between Mitzpe Ya’ir (an illegal outpost) and the Talya family ranch. They say they’re only allowed to live in the caves, and are not permitted to erect tents or shacks. But the caves are small, and not appropriate for human habitation, so they’ve erected tent-like structures. Between 2009 and yesterday they’ve received 17 warning notices. Their case is being handled by attorneys with the help of Rabbis for Human Rights. The Civil Administration, knowing that the court will issue an order forbidding demolition until it reaches a decision, beat it by a day, so yesterday bulldozers, soldiers and the Civil Administration arrived, demolished the structures and removed everything of value. We saw the injunction, which came a few hours too late… The Red Cross provided thin white tents, mattresses, water, etc. (See MW report 21.06.2011)

Tents and sheds belonging to people who have deeds to the land dating from the Turkish period are scattered next to the thriving settlement of Suseya. Civil Administration personnel know about these deeds, and ignore them. They’re permitting the settlers to abuse and harass these people, preventing them from grazing their flocks, plowing and planting.
