Second Friday of Ramadan, Damascus Gate

Wave upon wave of worshippers headed towards Damascus Gate on this second Friday of Ramadan.  Whereas last week the crowds thinned out by 11:30 AM, today there was no let up in the number of people who continued arriving till we left at 13:00.  We estimated that today’s crowd was three times as thick as the crowd last week.  The worshippers were orderly and passed through without incident.

Many roads were blocked starting in the Ramat Eshkol neighborhood.  We observed dozens of large buses carrying worshippers parking in the Ammunition Hill parking lot.  The easiest way to get to Damascus Gate from this part of the city was by using the light rail.

The Police and Border Police were positioned throughout the neighborhoods, directing traffic and mostly staying a discrete distance away.

The Old City was packed but the mass of people moved quickly as they headed to the Temple Mount.
