Afternoon

I have been coming to Qalandiya for years, and have made many friends and acquaintances there, but I have never seen so much light in the faces of so many people as on the day following the escape from Gilboa prison.

It was as though the wrinkles in the faces of those people – for whom the only familiar routine is that of the constant threat lurking at any street corner and every hour of the day and night – had been smoothed.

Not the traffic-jammed roads, nor the closureinfo-icon in honor of the Jewish holidays, nor the three boys imprisoned by policemen in concrete prison cells with no one knowing why and until when – none of these and more managed to dampen the feelings of pride and solidarity with the six escaped prisoners who overcame the system and became national heroes in one fell swoop.

Heroes that are no longer ‘they’ but rather – ‘we’.
