Morning

Anata 6.45  This shift was an "orientation" shift for Laure and
so we went to Anata first. The children are back to school and traffic
moved well and the soldier who checked the buses was genuinely polite.

Also his commander was uneasy in telling us off for photographing.

We saw 4 village women who as a rule have no
permits because they may be cleaning houses in  Bet Hanina or Shuafat
and thus not be eligible for work permits . They are mothers of many
children and they will never give up in trying to get through the
checkpoints. But  even the most polite commander will not allow them
through and it was the first time we saw them actually detained -
usually they are just sent back.

Qalandiya 8.15  Maybe it's because of Ramadan- there were just a
few people going through the checkpoint and the woman soldier
instructing  the women to put their bags through the screening machine
wasn't screaming and there was none waiting for the DCO to
open.

In the parking lot we watched a policeman breaking
in into a parked "suspicious" car with the greatest of ease. He had a
soldier guarding him as he was doing it. probably checking for a stolen
vehicle.

Maybe it was just as well for Laure to have such an uneventful first shift.
