Afternoon

Jubara,
A-Ras.

13.50 The gate to Jubara is locked but opened as soon as we
request this. At the childrens' gate (753)  there soldiers sit and one
motions us to pass. At A-Ras two soldiers stand at the road leading to
Tulkarm. One soldier sits in the sentry tower and the commander comes
up to greet us. The following conversation takes place in loud voices
between two soldiers.

"Why do they come here?"

"So as to tell stories about us."

"Why do they want to do so?"

"Because they don't like soldiers. They like Arabs."

The
commander says "There is nothing to be done. They are soldiers. They
are young. They have to get through another stage in their lives to
understand their roles."

Few cars in either direction.

Anabta.
14.40

Many cars in both directions. Two soldiers at the northern post
send cars through in both directions. Someitmes they stop one to
checked IDs and looks at the faces and then a long line starts to form
which soon evaporates when the soldiers send them on without checking.

The
lot at the right is empty and some cars stand near the crossroads. The
coffee vendor has fruit which he is tyring to sell. He said that the
soldiers chased him away and broke his plastic  box in which he had
water. The soldiers say they chased away the taxi drivers from the lot.
It is hard to hear this poor man and not be able to help him.
