Afternoon

13:15 Shuafat

A long line of cars inches towards the checkpoint.  One driver told us that he had already been waiting for 15 minutes.  He crossed 10 minutes later.  Which is to say that it took him 25 minutes to leave his neighbourhood in order to head for the united Jerusalem.

People we had met before were happy to see us, and children leaving school surrounded us and talked to us.

We joined the line at the pedestrian crossing, and crossed after 9 minutes. There were 9 persons ahead of us -- 1 minute wait per person.

At the exit checkpoint a truck was stopped and asked to wait on the side.  The truck waited and nothing happened.  After a while we went up to ask why.  The answer was they were "checking." A few minutes later the "checking" evidently ended and the driver was allowed to continue.
