Do the Internal Checkpoints on the West Bank Contribute to the Security of Israel, or Encourage Terror? For Whom and for What are they Erected?
An answer can be obtained from Ilan Paz, who was till recently Head of the Civilian Administration and commander of Binyamin and Menashe Regional Brigade. In an interview with Razi Barkai of Galei Zahal (IDF Radio), on Monday morning 30.4.07, he said:
The internal checkpoints in the West Bank must be removed, the humiliation that the checkpoints cause must be stopped. There will always be humiliation at the checkpoints, terrible things will always happen there. It encourages the terror and does not add security. The internal checkpoints must be removed.
That is exactly our contention, that is what we see every day and every hour. The checkpoints within the territories create despair, humiliations, abuses – they tear apart Palestinian society at all levels (economic, family, educational and health) and do not contribute to security, rather the opposite, they arouse the motivation to terror strikes and endanger the soldiers who stand there and all of us.
The very existence of the checkpoints is a violation of the international law of which Israel is a signatory. The maintenance of the checkpoints makes Israel a transgressor and the soldiers that operate them – inadvertent criminals.
For whom and for what are the checkpoints erected?
(The reference is to the internal checkpoints, deep inside the West Bank.)
The declared objective – to protect our security.
The hidden objective – to protect the “entire land of Israel: to protect the settlements and the settlers, to preserve the freedom of movement of Jews only on the main roads – the apartheid roads.
“Purification” of the Palestinian routes, and endless embitterment of their lives.
