East Jerusalem, where Hanevi'im st.
meets the main road north, a police block had stopped a truck
carrying grapes, which were duly confiscated and off-loaded on to a
Jerusalem police inspectorate truck. The claim was that the produce
was being "illegally" brought into Jerusalem and
"perhaps it was irrigated with untreated sewage water!"
Alongside the police block, a crowd of some 60 to 70 taxi drivers
from East Jerusalem was assembling, armed with home-made signs and
banners. They planned to demonstrate in Safra Sq. to protest being
barred from Jerusalem, and against what they say is a municipality
blocking of their traditional parking lot. "We can't make a
living!" they chanted as they made their way forward in
carefully counted groups of no more than ten.
