The shift was peaceful. 6:30. A single
jeep going around, here and there people jumping over the wall. Up
the hill the small gate was open. Every once in a while 1 of 3
border police jeeps passed by, and continued on swiftly after
showing some presence. Apparently, the regular border police unit
is gone for the week, replaced by 3 jeeps from a border police
station in Jerusalem. The passers by had mixed opinions about the
change of unit. After 7am things got more lively: 6-7 men were
taken off a bus for not having permits. Their IDs were given back
to them after a short check. Apparently, bus drivers, unlike taxi
drivers, are not held responsible for passengers without permits.
Transit drivers divide the passengers into those with and those
without permits. Prosecution for this offence seems common. The
drivers believe they might go to prison for it. They get a public
defender, whom they distrust, and the Moked does not
intervene.
