Roving checkpoint, 07:20. 2 border
policemen (a man and a woman) checking IDs of Arabic looking
passers by. They said that the decision to post soldiers there
depends mainly on personnel availability. The checking was being
done in a reasonable manner. At the gas station (near where the
American Consulate of East Jerusalem used to be), around 10 people
were sitting out of sight. Border policemen had
"captured" them near Damascus gate about half an hour
earlier, and took their IDs (Palestinian). At least one had a valid
permit, and had entered via Bethlehem checkpoint earlier that day.
The soldiers said that they must check them "on the
computer", and that it wont take long. Their orders were to
detain and check every person from the west bank no matter what.
Around half an hour later, all but the two youngest were released,
and they, too, shortly thereafter.
