On our way through Qalandya we were
struck by the paucity of people. No checks northbound, more
soldiers than pedestrians at the northern end. Many peddlers
selling sesame bagels, zucchini-like cucumbers, grapes, soft
drinks, bric-a-brac.

On our way back through Qalandya north, we encountered a woman with
4 children and double that amount of bags, attempting to go
southward with a young man whose function, apparently, was to help
with the bags, some quite heavy. She had the right papers to
proceed (Jordanian passport), he did not. We offered to help with
the bags, but in the shuffle, the young man simply proceeded
south...
