Bethlehem, Friday morning, June 30Observers: Efrat B., Ronit S. (reporting)Checkpoint 300:Few people. One station manned.Etzyon DCL:A frustrating story of two doctors who waited all day for already-signed papers, and left empty handed: Near the gate we met two Palestinian doctors from Bethlehem who arrived to receive their extended entry permits. One is specializing in rehabilitation at Alin hospital in Jerusalem, while the other is a fellow at Ichilov hospital, Tel Aviv. The Peres center for Peace organized their extended permits, and were notified that the permits were signed and ready, waiting at the DCL. It was important for the two doctors to collect the permit on Friday, so that on Sunday they can go to work. The two told us they had been waiting at the DCL since 7:00 am. We called Amir and Eyal, but they did not answer. We called Dalya Bassa, and after a few phone calls she said they should wait until Amir or Eyal return to the base and hand them the permits. In the meantime, a military vehicle with a soldier and officer inside arrived and stopped in front of the gate (perhaps because they spotted us). We explained the situation and handed them the old permits. They promised to check. After about 15 minutes the soldier stepped outside and said that indeed the permits are signed and ready, but he cannot open the office and give them to the doctors – only Eyal and Amir can do that. As the two officers were patrolling the area, he suggested that the Palestinian doctors go home and return around 15:30-16:00. “At that time you will for sure receive the permits”, he said. The two Palestinians left the DCL around noon time. In a phone conversation later in the day they told us they went back after three hours, waited some more, and at the end a soldier they had not met before told them they will not get the permits today. “Come on Sunday”, he said. ..
