Barta’a, Tuesday August 30, 2005, AMObservers: Yocheved G., Chassida S. (reporting)08:00 – 09:00The checkpoint commander, Second Lieutenant Z., who was nice and pleasant, couldn’t tell us when they’ll return to the regular Rihan checkpoint. We asked about closure and what were the instructions for today and his reply was vague.Traffic streamed along smoothly. Papers were inspected for those going into the West Bank. A young man handed his papers for inspection and within 10 minutes he was on his way, smiling. On the opposite side, going into Israel passage was also easy. A metal detector search, inspection of papers and off they go.The ‘dance’ procedure for inspecting drivers continues: the female soldier calls the driver by the mega-horn, he gets out of the vehicle, exposes his stomach and legs before he can move forward in his car for the rest of the inspection. Yocheved tried teaching the soldiers to say “men-fadlak” –(please) with doubtful success. It is quite amazing to watch a young woman taking advantage of her superior position to control people who could be her parents. One driver refused to expose himself, claiming he was religious and the Holy Koran bans him from exposing himself in front of a woman. The female soldier ordered him to move his truck to the side and go for inspection by the metal detector. He followed the orders and all ended peacefully, but what about the insult? The 5 boxes procedure is applied as usual. Palestinians try to cram the content of a large plastic bag into a standard size box and the female soldiers send them back to return part of the merchandise.
