Heavy traffic (both pedestrian and vehicular) to and from all directions. The traffic moved slowly but steadily. The northern side of the checkpoint had a very long line with people attempting to bypass from all directions. The situation was chaotic and stressful for both civilians and soldiers. As soon as we arrived at the northern side several soldiers approached us. We identified ourselves and they treated us respectfully. There were many more soldiers than usual and it was explained to us that there was a warning for an attack. In a short amount of time the lines were orderly and the checking was swift. We timed the line and at its worst it was approximately 10 minutes of waiting. The increase in soldiers seemed to help with the soldiers’ confidence and ease. The people waiting in line were treated respectfully and quickly. The same was true on the side that was checking the vehicles.Amazingly, everyone seemed to pass the checkpoint. We spoke with the taxi drivers and they reported that taxis were being returned to the owners after one month of impoundment. They also indicated that no one was even attempting the route anymore; it isn’t worth it to them.
