As we drove towards Abu Dis we found the border police at a new location, just over the Jerusalem border, opposite the cemetery 4 border police were holding the ID's of 5 men. A soldier began to yell "you are interfering with my work!". When he realized who we were, he settled down a bit (yes, we have some positive recognition!), but still demanded that we move, and he and the others refused to give us information. No soldiers or police at the wall or the university. Past the university at the hotel, no signs of anything untoward. We chatted with the guard at the university who attested to the fact that there have been screams from time to time at the 'hotel', but on a random basis. Back at the new checkpoint, the same men were still being held together with some others. When we tried to speak with the soldiers, we were ignored. Several transit drivers (whom we recognized) had arrived and were trying to discuss the situation with the soldiers. There was no apparent animosity in these discussions, though no progress was apparent either. We tried to reach Safadi by cellphone, because the men had been held nearly 2 hours, but alas, the phone failed to work. We will come better prepared next time!
