Afternoon

Jubara

13:30 – We enter the village without delay and pass the soldiers' post at the Schoolchildren's Gate. There is no movement of cars and there are no detaineesinfo-icon.

Ar-Ras

Thin traffic. Five cars are waiting. When we get there, they are already gone. The inspections are very superficial. Some drivers are asked about the contents of the trunk and about their destination. In most cases they make do with some questioning without actually checking the cars.

When we ask, the soldiers say that there are no restrictions. A station wagon parks on the roadside. The driver is detained, waiting for the police. (In the trunk he keeps a gear box or another engine part.) The soldiers say he has been waiting half an hour, while he says he has been waiting for an hour and a half. We cannot understand why it takes the police such a long time to get there since a police patrol car is standing idle at the entrance to the village. I wonder if the soldiers have been instructed to hunt down car thieves. The soldier, who keeps waving a flag of the "Blue and White" women, answers in the negative, claiming it's their initiative! [Blue and White women are right wing activists.]

In the meantime a patrol car arrives. A policeman gets out and after him another policeman who walks cheerfully straight to us and starts sweet talking us. The soldiers tell us he is a Druze. We ignore him. He continues running around in all directions of the junction, stops 3 Palestinian cars and checks their documents. The other policeman calls and asks him to finish with the case for which they came but to no avail. Eventually, they detain the driver, the gear box is taken in the police vehicle and the driver's vehicle is parked aside.

13:50 – We leave.

Anabta

14:10 – Only the checkpoint in the direction of Tulkarm is manned.

The drivers and the passengers of vehicles with Israeli licence plates are questioned and asked where they are from. Only Arabs are allowed to enter! Palestinian vehicles pass without delays. The soldiers say they act with consideration for the Ramadan fast.

14:20 – The traffic is streaming fast. We go on to Beit Iba.
