Afternoon

.I:45 Sheikh Saed

Lively traffic, consisting mostly of pupils coming home and people going about their business. We did not see any problems or delays.

Our presence did not please the security forces. Our filming provoked a confrontation.  After we rejected the usual challenge of "military area", the issue appeared to be settled, but the civilian guard's temper flared up.  His body language and shrillness were very intimidating

, until he was gently removed by one of the border policemen. Is any one in the Defence Ministry, responsible for the employment of guards, checking their psychological condition?  It's frightening to think of an encounter between this guard and a Palestinian child.

We drove in search of the eastern road of Sheikh Saed.  It's an enormous detour, via Al Ezariya, Abu Dis and Suwaharra.  The road was paved with the help of USAid, and is relatively comfortable consideringthe steep slopes.  It crosses the wadi (Kidron River) in which raw sewage from the eastern neighbourhoods of Jerusalem flows.  We wondered how much disease it spreads, and whether under heavy rain the road is still passable.

Wadi Nar

An impressive checkpoint has been constructed in this unnecessary spot.  Traffic flowed in both directions without impediment.
