Morning

09:00  We left the Rosh Ha’ayin train station.  A pleasant, sunny day.

09:20  One soldier on the bridge which connects to the Miskha-A-Sawiyya road below.  Two armored military vehicles drive one behind the other toward the Za’tara/Tapuach junction.  Another military vehicle drives in the opposite direction.

09:35  Za’tara-Tapuach junction.  The parking lot is empty.  A soldier inspects a Palestinian vehicle opposite the bus stop.

09:45  Almond trees in blossom greet us at the entrance to As-Sawiya.  We came because the army had fired tear gas at children from the village school, most recently two weeks ago.  At the municipal building we meet a pleasant man who describes the attack:  The boys’ school is an easy target:  it’s far from the village center, very near a main West Bank highway between Nablus and Ramallah.  So access is very easy.  Using stone-throwing as an excuse, two military jeeps, each with five soldiers, came to the school gate and began raining tear gas on the school.  The school staff hurriedly sent the children home through the other gate, leading to the village center, preventing injuries.  He tells us that, from time to time, soldiers arrive on foot and rest beneath the olive trees at the school’s entrance.  “Showing the flag.”  Once the soldiers chased a group of children, caught one of them and he was released only after the Palestinian DCL intervened.    Settlers from Eli and Rechalim, which are located on 3000 dunums of village land, also harass them from the hills overlooking the village.  Recently they tried to burn the school.  The villagers are also subjected to theft:  last year the settlers, who benefit from generous budgets, entered the village and stole seedlings and flower pots.

The village has 3000 residents, less than one-third of its original population.  Like the village of Turmus Ay'ya, many of As-Sawiya’s villagers have left.  Since 1967, and particularly during the first intifada, about 7000 villagers left.  Some to the Gulf states, some to the United States.  But, unlike those who left Turmus Ay'ya, many of whom return every summer to visit and invest large sums, there’s no such investment in As-Sawiya.  Other than a relatively new mosque which was built with donations from villagers who’d become wealthy abroad, there aren’t many signs of prosperity, to say the least.

We drive to the school on an internal road.  An exuberant group of youths greets us.  The designated clown holds a cigarette, pretends to smoke.  When we adopt the role of educators and attempt to dissuade him from smoking at his age, he shows us the “cigarette,” which is only a piece of white chalk, and his friends laugh uproariously.  “They fooled us”…  And to think that in Israeli schools, youths his age are exposed not only to cigarettes but to liquor and drugs.

One of the teachers arrives in the wake of the youths and asks us to return to the other entrance, near which is the school’s office.  We return to the center of the village and see a paved road that leads us to the second entrance.  It’s a surprising sight:  unlike other schools on the West Bank where there’s one large, closed building, this school reminds us of a kibbutz educational institution:  structures scattered among green terraces.  It’s recess, and groups of teachers sit on a high wall, chatting and giggling.  Pupils run among the buildings and wave to us hello.  The atmosphere is very relaxed.

Next to a building with a sign reading “Library” (in English) is the administration building.  The principal and some of the teachers already await us.  The principal is filled with good will.  He tells us the school serves two villages:  the pupils come from As-Sawiya and from the neighboring village of Luban a-Sharqiyya.  The eleventh and twelfth grades are divided into two tracks:  science and literature.  But when we try to understand the security situation, we learn his hands are tied:  he needs permission from the Palestinian Ministry of Education to tell us about the school and the army’s attacks.  He telephones the office in Huwwara, but they tell him only Ramallah can grant authorization.  The principal gives us the Ministry of Education phone number in Ramallah.  Maybe we’ll have better luck.

The weather changes suddenly when we leave the village.  It’s pouring as we drive through Marda, Zeita-Jama’in and Kifl Harith.  All the streets are empty.  The rain has chased everyone home.  We saw no military presence in those villages or on our way back.

12:30  We returned to Rosh Ha’ayin.
