Morning
Seriously? Does this make us safer?

Haris, Huwwara, Tapuach junction

09:00  Rosh Ha’ayin train station.  We head for Haris.  The police jeep that had been parked at the corner of the entrance to Haris has disappeared.

09:03  We reached Haris.  Last week we found the door to the club locked.  The club’s director hadn’t notified us in advance that, for some reason, she’d decided not to open it.  Today the door was open; we hope it won’t happen again.  Sinces three weeks had passed since the previous lesson we began by reviewing vocabulary related to telling time, including numbers by gender, using a large clock on the club’s wall.  The women told time in hours, half-hours, quarter-hours and minutes.  Today’s surprise was that the women were able to read a new text with a minimum of errors.  They were very satisfied.  We were glad that the method of teaching the entire alphabet right at the beginning had proven itself.

The tour:

On Sunday Petahya told us about an article in a Palestinian newspaper reporting that settlers (apparently from Yitzhar) had invaded Huwwara’s olive groves and cut down about 60 trees with a power saw.  We drove to Huwwara via Kifl Harith, Zeita, ‘Einabus and Jama’in.

10:00  Huwwara.  The town is bustling, stores are open, and there are many shoppers.  We meet T., the owner of one of the three damaged groves.  His wife had discovered the vandalism.  Unlike previous incidents in which settlers had damaged seedlings or saplings, this time they’d cut down trees which were 20-30 years old.  T. assumes that people from Yitzhar were responsible because his grove is very near the settlement.  T. didn’t seem angry.  Had he no faith in us or – even worse – had he simply accepted the situation, given up?  What, in any case, did he do?  Reported the incident to the municipality, which is supposed to notify the DCL.  He didn’t file a complaint with the police.  There’s no point.

10:45  Tapuach junction.  We did not see detained cars.

11:15  Back to Huwwara.  We saw no military vehicles on the return trip.

11:45  We returned to Rosh Ha’ayin.
