Eyal Crossing, Irtah (Sha'ar Efrayim)

Very stormy – strong winds, lightning, thunder, water flowing down turning into rushing rivers flooding the open area and the road 400 meters long through which the laborers exiting the checkpoint must walk to reach the waiting vehicles.

When we reached the rear of the checkpoint facility, the portion of the lane that’s fenced and bounded by concertina wire through which the men and women must pass, it was completely empty.  Only at the far end, from the Palestinian side (apparently, although it’s completely controlled by Israel), did we hear the voices of people crowded under the canopy.  Just before 04:00 a few people began to arrive at the winding, uncovered portion of the lane in front of the electrical revolving gates at the entrance.  The checkpoint opened at 04:05.  The turnstile remained open but there were only about 20 people in the first wave crossing the plaza in pouring rain, through the stream of water flowing through it.  It came from the gutter of the portion of the roof next to the inspection facility opening directly to this plaza.  People then began arriving little by little.  The first group exited the other side of the inspection facility after about 12 minutes.  Not more than 100 people went through in 40 minutes, including very few women.  They said that people working outside, either in construction or in agriculture, aren’t working today – probably not until Friday (losing work days they won’t be compensated for).  Those coming through after the first group complained that because so few people were crossing the inspectors checked them and their belongings extremely carefully.  Among those we saw, wrapped in thin coats and plastic sacks, their shoes soaked, the few women wore sweaters, not coats, dressed inappropriately for the heavy wind and rain.  As you know, most of them are agricultural workers (earning the lowest daily pay).  The covered exit lane from the inspection facility, which is usually locked, was now open.  New signs had been erected with arrows pointing to Tulkarm.  A few people could crowd under the shelter during the gusts of heavy rain.  Few cars were waiting.

The exit lane from the inspection facility is canopied for a fairly long portion of the path, and there’s another canopy in the area where the vehicles wait, and also a snack bar with a covered, raised porch.  So there are places to shelter from the rain, and they were crowded with people.  Three public buses waited when we arrived, one of them full, and others may have already driven off.  People tell us that fewer than half the usual number came today.  The parking area filled with cars hadn’t become a lake as it had at Irtach.

A young father we spoke to from a village near Nablus told us about the problems and humiliations at the Za’tara/Tapuach checkpoint.  His account allowed to glimpse though a narrow crack lives made precarious by the arbitrary actions of the various government institutions and their violent authorities.  Well-versed in suffering he said, “There are good Jews, sweet as sugar, but not many.”

סוער מאוד- רוח עזה, ברקים, רעמים, זרמי מים מלמעלה שנהפכים לנהרות שוצפים  בשטח הרחבה שאליה יוצאים הפועלים  והפועלות ועל פני הכביש בן כ-400 מטרים שעליהם לפסוע בו כדי להגיע למכוניות הממתינות.

בשעה שהגענו לחלק האחורי של מתקן המחסום, לחלק המסלול המגודר ומתולתל בתיל , שדרכו צריכים האנשים והנשים לעבור ,המקום היה ריק לגמרי, ורק בקצהו הרחוק, בצד הפלסטיני (לכאורה, שהרי הוא בשליטה גמורה של ישראל)  נשמעו קולות אנשים המצטופפים שם מתחת לסככה.  ממש לקראת השעה ארבע התחילו להגיע אנשים מעטים לחלק המתפתל והלא מסוכך של המסלול שלפני קרוסלות הכניסה החשמליות.  בארבע וחמש דקות נפתח המחסום. הקרוסלות נשארו פתוחות כל העת, אבל הגל הראשון מנה רק כ -20 בני אדם שחצו במהירות את החצר תחת מטחי גשם צולפים, ואת זרם המים שחצה את החצר לרוחבה. מקורו היה במרזב של פיסת הגג שליד הכניסה למתקן הבדיקה, שפתחו כוון ישירות אל חצר זו.    לאחר מכן הגיעו אנשים טיפין טיפין.  הקבוצה הראשונה יצאה מצדו האחר של מתקן הבדיקה לאחר כ-12 דקות. במשך  40 דקות יצאו לא יותר מ-100 אנשים וכן נשים ספורות עד מאוד. הם הסבירו כי מי שעובד בחוץ בין בבניין בין בחקלאות לא יצא-היום  וכנראה לא עד יום ו (הפסד ימי עבודה שאין עליו שום פיצוי).  היוצאים לאחר הקבוצה הראשונה התלוננו כי בשל המספר הקטן של היוצאים לעבודה הבודקים בדקו אותם ואת חפציהם בקפדנות יתרה.  מבין כל אלה שראינו, עטופים במעילים דלים ובשקי ניילון, ונעולים נעלים מוצפות מים לגמרי, הנשים הספורות שהגיעו היו לבושות  בסוודרים ולא במעילים, כלומר באורח הפחות מתאים והולם לתנאי מזג האוויר הקשים. מרביתן, כידוע , עובדות בחקלאות (השכר היומי הנמוך ביותר).  המסלול המסוכך  ביציאה ממתקן הבדיקות, בחלק הנעול בדרך כלל,  היה הפעם פתוח.  הוצב שם שילוט חדש עם חצים  לכוון טול כארם. ביציאה ממתקן הבדיקות היה הפעם פתוח ואנשים  אחדים יכלו להסתופף שם בזמן המטחים העזים.  מספר המכוניות הממתינות היה קטן גם הוא.

באייל הנתיב היוצא ממתקן הבידוק של המחסום מסוכך לאורך פיסת שביל ארוכה למדי, יש סככה נוספת באזור שבו ממתינים כלי הרכב וכן מזנון שגם לו מרפסת עץ מוגבהת ומסוככת.  יוצא אפוא שיש מקומות מסתור רבים יותר מפני הגשם, והם מלאו באנשים . גם שלושה אוטובוסים של השירות הציבורי המתינו כשהגענו, אחד מהם מלא,  ויתכן שהיו כאלה שכבר נסעו. מדברי אנשים כאן למדנו שבאו פחות ממחצית ממספר האנשים הרגיל.  הרחבה מלאת המכוניות לא נהפכה לאגם -זוטא כמו בארתח

איש צעיר, אב לילדים,  שאתו שוחחנו, מכפר בסביבות שכם, סיפר על תלאות והשפלות במחסום  זעתר/תפוח, ודרך סיפורו נפתח לנו סדק צר להביט בעדו על חיים תלויים על בלימה בשל שרירותיהן של רשויות המדינה למיניהן ולסוגיהן  ושל זרועותיהן האלימות.   האיש למוד הסבל הזה אמר : ”יש יהודים טובים, טובים סוּכר, אבל קצת“.
