Hebron

I am very cautious about dialogue with settlers……and today was an example.

We were in Hebron and saw on a higher road many army jeeps so Muhammed dropped us and Yehudit and I went up to see what was happening. There were two cars waiting and as we arrived they turned down and drove off. I stopped the one….which I would not have done had I realized he was a settler……and asked him politely if he knew what was going on. He wanted to know why we were asking and immediately went into a tirade against us and the Palestinians with a big smile on his face and the sweetest of tones and the nastiest of words. Tried to tell us  amongst other things that he was more a friend to the Palestinians than we were and that he knew them better than we do and what he thought of us. He said things would be fine if the Palestinians would stick to what they have and the Israelis would stick to what they have. I would have agreed with him but I knew that his interpretation of his words and mine were very different interpretations. And that is also the reason why I am very cautious to any dialogue I have with them. You never know when the vilifications are going to start and even though I then just move off it is hard for me…..as you all know …to just let them get on with it.
