Afternoon

16:00 Three turnstiles were open when we arrived and the situation was reasonable but almost immediately one stopped working. Only after a phone call did the soldiers continue their work but after a few minutes the 3rd turnstile closed and in spite of phone calls to the Matak and others nothing helped and two remained open. We counted 40 people in one turnstile and it took 30 minutes to get through. In the meantime the outside turnstile was closed. How much more satisfaction to keep people standing like cattle in the narrow space than to allow them to go through without problem to the wider area inside the checkpoint. When we left there were about 30 people in two turnstiles and about 20 in the shed. Otherwise all was quiet.

We met one young man who claimed that his ID had been taken from him about a month ago in the area of Qalandiya by the border police for no reason. He has been to the Palestinian Authority several times but each time has been told to come back in a few days. We turned the matter over to Hanna Barag.
