Morning

5:30

Three lanes were open when we arrived, and though there were many people the feeling was that people crossed at a good rate. Additional people kept arriving and the number waiting at the humanitarian gate also increased. When the DCO representative arrived we saw something we’d never seen before – people went directly to lane 5 that was designated specifically for them. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

What joy, after so many years at Qalandiya. We went to see the crossing for schoolchildren and laborers holding a Jerusalem ID. They don’t seem to be getting better or faster treatment. A man from the Jerusalem bus company thought we were new there and told us sadly how much the children suffer at this crossing.

It’s always hard to come here with guests and see Qalandiya through their eyes. That’s what it was like for us this morning…
