Morning

We arrived at 05.30 and saw that there are more observers- someone from the British Foreign office, more people from the British consulate and more EAPI. It always amazes us that the conditions at Qalandiya are so ghastly when everyone in the know knows that Qalandiya is the most visited, photographed,f ilmed, reported on and mentioned checkpoint of them all. And that if the powers that be worry about Israel's image well this is the image of occupation presented to the world at Qalandiya. And if you add the accoustic effects of women soldiers screaming through the loudspeakers (so that one can't even determine whether it is in hebrew or Arabic) then it is a very grim picture.

There were many many people on the line and as always things get a bit better after 6am when the DCO officer arrives.

We met a village woman aged about 55 in tears. She has a vegetable stall and the soldiers took away her permit. It turned out that the big bags of thyme aroused the attention of MP soldiers since thyme  (in Israel - and now also occupied territories?) is a protected species of herbs !!! She was then handed over to the DCO officers and we pressume that her permit was returned to her.
