Russian Compound

Presiding: Judge Captain (res.) Azriel Levy

Investigator: Itzik

It was a short session wherein remand extensions were heard for only six detaineesinfo-icon, three of which were prevented from seeing lawyers. Attorney Mamon represented these three, who were not present, as well as two more who were. The judge allowed Mamon to ask the investigator questions, and insisted that the investigator reply. Most of the replies were, “I cannot answer that at this time”. The ritual continued: Mamon asked, the investigator replied, the detainee was asked his name, yet didn’t participate.

The fifth detainee, Mahmoud Muhammad Maktub, 17, had no representation. He had been arrested on October 19, 2007. He was not home when they came to arrest him, so his father and brother were arrested (when they came to the house?), and the next day when Mahmoud went to Ofer to look for them (?), he was arrested. The judge extended his remand for 15 days, and instructed that his family be notified of his detention and advised to retain counsel.

When the hearing ended, we had a long and instructive conversation with the judge from which we drew many conclusions that will be passed along to the other court observers.
