Azon Atma

8:00 a.m.

Quiet.  From time to time workers cross the roadblock; they offer their papers for inspection and cross to the other side of the road.

Vans come to collect them.

Za'atra/Tapuach roadblock

8:40 a.m.

Very few cars.

Huwwara

The car park is quite empty.  There are almost no people crossing the roadblock.

The DCO officer, accompanied by a few soldiers, comes over to us.  To our surprise they inform us ceremoniously: today (or from today?) the situation is being eased.  The roadblock will be open for 24 hours a day and there are no inspections for those entering and leaving.

And indeed, to our great surprise, that is what is happening:  the checkpoints for cars were staffed but cars entered and left without any inspection.  Most of them slowed down a bit by the soldiers before crossing and waited for permission, but almost all of them crossed with no inspection.  The pedestrian crossing was, of course, almost empty because they could cross by car, taxi, etc.

Only a glum lorry driver and the driver of a car emptying out sewerage were made to turn back.

9:15 a.m.

A Palestinian police car wanting to enter Nablus is detained, and after some clarification, sent back.

For some reason, a jam started at the car exit from Nablus, we could not see if they were all being inspected but it caused a quite long queue to build up.  We were standing quite far away and could not exactly see what was going on.

Without doubt it was a different kind of day to those we had seen up to now.  A sign of things to come??  The beginning of the end of the roadblocks???  Is Mitchell around??

The people in the car park seemed satisfied and some of them were warily optimistic.
